NextGen Class of 2019 Celebrates at EUA

On September 25, the CARW Class of 2019 toasted to a year of hard work, learning, and relationship building. The event took place on the rooftop of EUA in Milwaukee’s Third Ward. They were joined by a number of the program’s speakers, moderators, and leadership from CARW. Nicole Martin led the presentation. When asked for comments about the NextGen program, people said that they made invaluable connections with industry leaders they wouldn’t have otherwise met; learned from the best of the best in the industry; and discovered the depth and breadth of the commercial real estate industry. CARW is now accepting applications for the class of 2020 HERE.

NextGen Recap | “Property management will always be a people business”

On September 4, the CARW NextGen class finished out their year of sessions with a panel of professionals in property management. Huge thanks to Margaret Gehring with CBRE, Rick Stoll with Colliers International, and Sherry King with Tishman Speyer for sharing their knowledge and expertise. Moderator Joe Lak with Colliers International led captivating discussions with the group. The panelists and NextGenR’s discussed the most challenging and rewarding aspects of their job, evolution in the industry, the importance of relationships with people, war stories involving cockroaches….and much more!

Key Takeaways:

The most enjoyable and most challenging parts of the job are the people.
Property management is a cyclical industry.
The industry is becoming more and more technologically advanced, and it’s important to keep up. However, property management will always be a people business.
Tracking the demographics of outgoing and incoming markets will become more challenging to predict.
Never burn a bridge. Burning a bridge only takes a second, but the negative effects last a lifetime.
Learn the lessons from losses.
Do the fundamentals: work hard, show up early, call people, network, volunteer, serve on a committee.
Don’t micro-manage people. Let your workers show their individual strengths.
If you’re in a position of hiring, hire for personality, not skill-set.
Always work on your people skills.

NextGen Gives Back – Hunger Task Force

The Next Generation of Commercial Real Estate is not only talented – they are generous too. The CARW NextGenners from 2017, 2018 and 2019 teamed up to give back. They spent time on August 8th packing food for Hunger Task Force. Not only did they donate food requested by the organization, but they packaged it for families in need. Big thanks to Alexandra Don of AVK Law LLC for leading the coordination for this unique community service opportunity. The applications for NextGen Class of 2020 will open soon! NextGen Hunger Task Force Event

Last week our 2019 NexGen’Rs volunteered their time and resources at the Hunger Task Force! They sorted and organized food so that it is ready to be distributed to the hungry in Wisconsin. The Hunger Task Force is a free and local food bank and the state’s leading anti-hunger organization, working to end hunger by be a voice for the voiceless. NextGen Recap | Attorney Session

On July 10, the CARW NextGen class continued with a panel of Attorneys. Huge thanks to Sarah Jelencic – Foley & Lardner, Brian Randall – Davis & Kuelthau and Ann Chandler – von Briesen & Roper for sharing their expertise. Moderator Alyssa Geisler with CBRE and NextGenR class of 2017, led captivating discussions with the group. The panelists and NextGenR’s discussed everything from how and when to communicate with attorneys to daily responsibilities of an attorney.

Real Estate has to be flexible. If you’re not willing to retool, you are at risk to become obsolete.
Communication is key.
Don’t make assumptions, always ask questions!

NextGen Recap | Construction Session

On June 12th, the CARW NextGen class continued with a panel of General Contractors. Big thanks to Kevin White: Berghammer Construction Corporation, Dave Schwartz: Innovative Construction Solutions, Inc., and Erik Lindstrom: Gilbane Building Company for sitting on our panel. Moderator Ben Anderson with Colliers International did a great job leading lively discussions with the group. The panelists and NextGenR’s discussed everything from the aging workforce and communication with general contractors to cost-effective ways to meet clients’ needs and expectations.

Advice:

Find a mentor who has a list of lessons learned
Stay humble, and treat people fairly
Build your network, and don’t take it for granted – check in with them!
Don’t ever stop being willing to learn – about yourself, others and how you do what you do
Don’t settle for “good enough”
Never stop caring about other people
Know what you’re good at
Take a step back and enjoy where you’re at
Have passions outside of work

CARW Announces 2019 NextGen Class

MILWAUKEE – Commercial Association of REALTORS® Wisconsin (CARW), the voice of commercial real estate, is pleased to announce the organization’s 2019 NextGen class. The program includes 9 months of programming and strategic networking opportunities to introduce and solidify relationships with some of Milwaukee’s most active, established real estate professionals.

Last year, CARW welcomed 18 talented real estate professionals. “I’ve found that, for me, Commercial Real Estate is the best way to stay proactive in understanding the future needs in business and retail,” said Kelsey Webb with Eppstein Uhen Architects. Webb was a 2018 NextGen graduate.

2019 NextGen Class:

We will be featuring one of the CARW NextGen participants. There are 20 commercial real estate professionals involved in the program – each with their unique story to share and individual motivation for involvement.
