On February 28, the next generation of commercial real estate leaders took center stage during the inaugural Wisconsin CORE Case Competition—an event organized by students and supported by the Commercial Association of REALTORS® Wisconsin (CARW) in partnership with universities participating in its annual student program.
Students from UW–Milwaukee, UW–Madison, UW–Whitewater, UW–La Crosse, UW–Stout, and Marquette University formed teams to tackle a real Milwaukee development challenge. With just two weeks to prepare, the teams developed and presented proposals before a panel of industry judges.
Nine teams participated in the competition, which began at Marquette University and concluded at the Wisconsin Club, where finalists delivered their proposals for final judging. Judges included Bob Monnat, Charlie Monnat, Phillip Aiello, Bill Quinlivan, and Tracy Johnson.
“I was inspired not only by the quality of the presentations—developed in just a few short weeks—but by the energy and excitement surrounding the event,” said Tracy Johnson, President & CEO of CARW. “It was clear this competition was more than academic. With teams made up of freshmen through seniors, students were building relationships across class years and campuses that will shape their professional futures.”
The competition also highlighted the wide range of disciplines that feed into the commercial real estate industry. Some students are pursuing formal coursework and concentrations in real estate, while others are studying finance, marketing, accounting, construction management, and related fields—but all were drawn together by a shared interest in the built environment and the business behind it.
“Together, they delivered thoughtful, feasible proposals for a real Milwaukee site,” Johnson said. “As judges, we asked difficult questions, and every team responded with poise, preparation, and confidence. What stood out most was their curiosity and professionalism. This competition didn’t just test their skills—it demonstrated the depth of talent we have in Wisconsin and reinforced why investing in the next generation of commercial real estate leaders matters.”
The Wisconsin CORE Case Competition is part of CARW’s broader commitment to strengthening the talent pipeline and connecting students with real-world opportunities in Wisconsin’s commercial real estate industry.
Congratulations to all who participated and won! First place went to Marquette University; second place to UW-Milwaukee, and third place to UW-Stout. Prizes ranged from $2,500 to $1,000. Bravo Antonio Coca for bringing this idea to life!
