Communities are beginning to implement their individual masking rules and individual businesses are too. On July 16, 2020, a City-wide mandate for mask-wearing goes into effect. There is no end date for the ordinance at this time. Great detail is provided on the ordinance but specific questions have come to us related to office buildings and tenant spaces.
Office Buildings and Tenant Spaces:
The City of Milwaukee ordinance applies to public indoor and outdoor spaces. Related to office buildings and tenant spaces, masking is required in a public or common area, or in an office that is accessible to the public. Businesses may turn away those who refuse to wear masks. Private businesses may also create their own internal policies based on individual circumstances.
At this time, exceptions would include a public office with a closed door, or a circumstance where someone is eating/drinking. For a public office with a closed door, when someone enters the space, a mask would be required for both people. At a desk or cubicle, when there are others in the space, a mask is required regardless of ability to socially distance and size of the space. This applies to public spaces and offices.
In common areas of office buildings, individuals are required to wear masks at all times including a common area multi-stalled restroom or in an elevator, even if they are alone.
Enforcement: This ordinance relies heavily on self-compliance. There will be fines for businesses who do not comply. More information on compliance and enforcement is HERE.
Exemptions: There will be exemptions for those who have health issues – the City will release further information.
Signage: Signage to promote mask wearing is not required but is recommended. Many office buildings have mask policies displayed already. That may be addressed in a separate order. Sample signs may be made available.
Providing Masks: Businesses are not required to provide masks although some are choosing to do so. The City will be providing all residents with a supply of masks.
FAQ Resource: The Milwaukee Health Department is developing a FAQ page that will answer many questions that have been asked regarding compliance and enforcement. The page can be found here: https://city.milwaukee.gov/Coronavirus/Prevention#masks
We continue to work with the City and Health Department as well as members. Please contact us with more questions and use the City’s resources for more information.
