Back in Madison today—talking about one of the most poignant topics: collaboration.
Co-presenting with Smart Growth Madison, CARW hosted a powerful panel featuring Jason Illstrup (Downtown Madison Inc) and Matt Dorner (Milwaukee Downtown BID 21), representing Madison and Milwaukee respectively. The event took place at 316 Ovation. Big thanks to HOVDE for hosting and Dina Stetler and Gretchen Richards for pulling the program together.
Speakers shared what makes each city unique—what’s working, what’s challenging, and most importantly, where there’s opportunity.
A key takeaway? We need to start thinking of Madison and Milwaukee as one regional powerhouse—a dynamic corridor between Minneapolis and Chicago. Many commercial real estate professionals are already working across both markets, and their clients are constantly looking for ways to grow. The opportunities for alignment are endless, but trust and connection are where it begins.
Huge thanks to Cushman & Wakefield | Boerke and Innovative Construction Solutions for sponsoring today’s program.
We were also fortunate to hear from Cori Lamont and Nathan Conrad from the Wisconsin REALTORS® Association. WRA continues to be an incredible partner and fierce advocate for our industry. They provided updates on:
-
The upcoming Senate hearing on SB 180, where REALTOR Members will be testifying. This bill provides a framework for expanding access to WHEDA funds—part of the $525M in housing investments for Wisconsin.
-
Efforts to maintain property tax levy limits (Wisconsin currently ranks 8th highest in the nation).
-
The push to reduce the real estate transfer tax, which affects both commercial and residential sectors.
After a jam-packed program, the CARW team hit the road and visited several Madison member offices across the city. These conversations always inspire new ideas and help us identify how we can keep adding value—not just through networking and advocacy, but real connection.
