As employees return to the workplace and retailers reopen following closures due to COVID-19, many are discussing liability considerations related to those who may become affected by COVID-19 after entering a business. This is a hurdle for some companies who would be unable to afford defending themselves through an expensive lawsuit. At this time, legislation introduced by Congress for the next relief package does not include funding for liablity protections. As such, business organizatoins along with others in real estate have been urging congress to include liability protections in any furhter relief legislation related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Senate has suggested that it must be included in order to be considered. These protections would be designed to safeguard businesses, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions, as well as healthcare providers and facilities from unfair lawsuits so that they can continue to contribute to a safe and effective recovery from this pandemic through safe business operations or in the course of providing assistance.
