Thank you to members who participated in the Call to Action to local legislators on a crucial package of housing bills. More than 1,500 contacts were made to Assembly and Senate leaders who passed bipartisan legislation that will help create solutions for Wisconsin’s housing crisis. While the bills cleared the houses – they must be passed into law by Governor Evers.
We will be asking again, for your support, in a Call for Action to Governor Evers who will receive the bills for signature. The Call for Action will be sent out on Friday morning and includes contact information and text to reach out to the Governor’s office.
With statewide housing inventory levels at historic lows and median home prices continuing to rise, Wisconsin has a major workforce housing shortage problem. Employers in the state are having a hard time recruiting workers to fill thousands of job openings due to a historic shortage of affordable housing options for workers. This issue impacts all aspects of economic development and commercial real estate.
Two of the biggest barriers to new home building in communities are the opposition from existing residents, or NIMBYs (Not in My Backyard), and the lack of financing tools for new development. The bills address these barriers in addition to:
- Help rehabilitate older housing stock.
- Turn vacant commercial properties into vibrant residential spaces.
- Build much needed infrastructure.
- Revitalize our main streets.
- Add to the certainty and predictability in the development-approval process.
