Many have asked for an update on what CARW has deemed its number one legislative priority: the Downtown Arena. As has been widely publicized, a funding model (S.B. 209) was signed into law on Wednesday, August 12, and a proposal is now before the City of Milwaukee Common Council. CARW’s role on the State portion was significant and members stepped up with letters and calls to legislators. The local vote is crucial to ensuring a shovel is in the ground this fall. CARW leadership has been working with local officials, specifically City of Milwaukee Aldermen, to glean their thoughts on how the vote will go while also reinforcing our support of the project. Some are enthusiastic about the city’s portion, while others are absolutely against it – still others, are waiting to hear from the public. We will continue to meet with them until the vote on September 22nd, and hope you too, will assist with engagement. Here are next steps:
- A public hearing will be held on Monday, August 31st to discuss the City’s portion of the project (explained here). All are invited to attend beginning at 4:00 p.m. at City Hall (200 E Wells) in room 301-B.
- You may also contact the Common Council by clicking this link HERE. A letter will populate to Chairman of the Board, Alderman Mike Murphy.
- The Finance Committee and Zoning and Neighborhood Development Committee will take up portions of the proposal in mid September.
- Full Common Council will vote on the proposal on September 22.
