Thank you to the team at JP Cullen for an amazing tour of the Milwaukee VA Soldiers’ Home. This historic renovation has been in the works for a number of year and is almost complete. CARW members were lucky enough to tour the Old Main Building and the Administration Building with the project superintendent. The JP Cullen team has provided great attention to detail and was able to keep many of the original elements of these historic buildings.
The Milwaukee VA Soldiers Home Historic District on the grounds of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center is one of Milwaukee’s most important historic assets. As part of an Enhanced Use Lease (EUL) agreement with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, The Alexander Company and City of Milwaukee Housing Authority are leading a team that has been chosen to restore and rehabilitate six of the District’s vacant buildings.
Under the proposal, the buildings – including Old Main (Building 2), the most prominent and recognizable building on the campus, the Administration Building (Building 1), the Catholic Chaplain’s Quarters (Building 14) and three duplexes (Buildings 18, 19 and 62) – will be renovated into a total of 101 housing units with supportive services for veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
