- The NAR conducts this survey every two years and covers the 50 largest metropolitan statistical areas of the community representing 57% of the population. While answers in 2017, to most of the questions showed slight change from 2015, responses offered isights into the increasing value people place on a walkable lifestyle. A few take-aways:
- Six out of 10 people said they would spend more (17% a lot more and 43% a little more) to live in a community where they could walk to parks, shops and restaurants.
- More than half said they would prefer to live in a house with a small yard versus a similar house with a large yard if it enabled them to walk to more places
- More than half also said they would prefer to live in an apartment or townhouse rather than a detached house if it meant an easy walk to places they need to go and a shorter commute to work.
