The City of Milwaukee Common Council has elected a new Council President – Alderman Cavalier “Chevy” Johnson. He was originally elected to the Milwaukee Common Council in 2016. Prior to that he worked as a staff assistant to Mayor Tom Barret and twice he ran for a seat on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. Cavalier will hold this position as Council President for four years. The position was most recently held by Alderman Ashanti Hamilton who did not seek reelection for the role.
In this role as Common Council President, Johnson will be responsible for all appointments to the council’s seven standing committees and many special committees, and presides over all meetings of the full council. He becomes acting mayor when the mayor is out of the city.
According to the Journal Sentinel, Johnson is one of 10 siblings. His father worked as a janitor and his mother was a certified nursing assistant.
